1.5. How to recover lost partition

If you cannot find a disk partition on your computer Define virtual partition and Find lost partition functions will help you detect and recover lost partitions.

      How to define virtual partition

Define virtual partition enables to define a partition for UFS Explorer software.

The option is applied to a selected storage. If the size and start of the partition are known press Define partition in the Tool bar for a current storage or choose Define virtual partition from the context menu box of a current storage.

The button activates Define new partition parameters dialog where you can set start and size sectors of the partition. After the start and size sectors are entered press Define for activation.

The program detects file system by a specified storage start. If the file system is not detected, the program gives notice suggesting to change partition parameters. Press No if you are sure that partition parameters were defined correctly. The program will save a new partition to the end of the partition list with Unknown file system type. Yes button returns you to the previous dialog box.

If file system is detected the program blocks start and size input boxes. The file system type is in this case displayed in File system type box. After that Label box becomes active for modifications. Press OK to save the partition.

In case if a predetermined partition size does not coincide with the size of a found file system the program suggests to define partition by file system size.

      How to find partition

function helps automatically find disk partition if not displayed in the Partition selection panel.

Partition search is activated with Find partition button in the Tool bar for a selected storage or Find lost partition from context menu of a selected storage.

Find lost partition dialog allows to launch disk scanning operation and activate operations on found partitions after scanning is completed.

Find now activates Define scan parameters dialog.

Start sector and Count sectors boxes are active for setting a range of disk space for scanning. From the list of file systems select required file system types and press OK button to start scanning. Cancel button will return you to Find lost partition dialog.

During scanning operation the software displays all the partitions found on the disk in Find lost partition dialog with information about start, size, label and file system type for each partition.

File system status is marked with a circle icon. The icon is green if file system quick test results in intactness and readability of file system on the partition. The icon is yellow if file system test results in possible damage of the file system. The icon is red if the software detects problems with file system such as file system unreadability or problems with directories readability.

After scanning is finished the following Tool bar buttons become active for further operations:

        • Find now will scan the storage or its definite part repeatedly. At the same time new scan operation removes scan results of any previous scan operation. The program requires confirmation for new scan operation.

        • Save allows to save a list of partitions for future reference. The list of found partitions will be saved to a selected destination in “.ufsxpl” format.

Note: To avoid any permanent data loss do not save this file to the place where you recover your data from.

        • Load opens a folder containing a file with the list of partitions found by the software. It inserts required list to Find lost partition dialog for further operations.

        • With Use selected button selected partition(s) is (are) entered into the Partition list in Partition selection panel.
